Nice one Fiona! Seasonal celebrations - just saying - are not only for those with servants (as I'm sure you know!) but are/were an opportunity for families, neighbours etc, to get together for the small repetitive tasks - pipping raisins, rolling dumplings, skinning almonds - festive dishes often require. Rowan trees are laden with berries in central London this year - must get out there with basket and stripping fork.....

Really great article as always. Your comments on meat put me in mind if Burns. “Some hae meat an canna eat, And some wad eat that want it; But we hae meat, and we can eat, And sae the Lord be thankit”.

Loved your point from Corinthians, “All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.” I heard that fish flesh, considered separate from other flesh, also included beavers!
