Advent from the Latin word adventus meaning arrival or coming begins on the Sunday closest to November 30th, St Andrew’s Day and ends on Christmas Eve.
You remind me of my youthful mothering days. This is exactly how I would do our Jesse tree. Aww, thank you for bringing back sweet memories. This brought me so much joy reading this! Thank you @KristinHaakenson for restacking & introducing me to Fiona’s SubStack! 🥰
I’m really enjoying this skip through the Forager’s Year Fiona. A few weeks ago you teased us with a glimpse of your library. Could you show us a little bit more-especially the books you are referencing ?
One of my children suggested that it's rather Dickensian in style. Vignettes. I'm almost ten years behind with a book and Substack is helping me to be more disciplined. I've met some wonderful kindred spirits on here too and not just from the UK : @nancyharmonjenkins @hearthstonefables to name but two, are in the USA. @elisabethluard encouraged me @substack I remain indebted, Elisabeth. I'll include more book piles and will ensure JSTOR hits the pulished book, one day.....
Lovely reminder of the Christmas calendar, Fiona - used to make our own Advent calendar when my children were young. Interesting to trace the old midwinter trads - fire, light, greenery, decorated trees - beneath the new.
“Joy is not in things but in us” absolutely the sentiment for Christmas. I love the idea of advent being a ladder we climb to reach Christmas rather than a calendar we open to demand chocolates on each day. Your childhood traditions seem to bring this home!
Very much enjoyed the reference to the first eight verses of the third chapter of the biblical Book of Ecclesiastes, reminds me very much of the song “Turn, Turn, Turn” by the Byrds. Not an advent song, but certainly a message to turn towards Christ as the season approaches!

Oh Fiona, your wreath!! What a beautiful meditation on the season, and a wreath befitting its beauty. This is remarkable.
That wreath gets me every time- it is exquisite
